MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro 17 Inch

MacBook Pro 17 Inch

The core of my new workstation is my 17″ MacBook Pro, (Later 2009 edition) When I purchased this, decided that I’d go all in an had the processor upgraded to 3.0Ghz, and got the 512Gb Hard drive. I left the ram on the default 4GB.

Cable Management

In total there are still quite a few cables that need to be managed.

USB

  • Mouse
  • Printer
  • Wacom
  • iPhone Dock
  • Camera

Of these, the Printer, Wacom, iPhone and mouse are needed whenever my MacBook is plugged in.

Laptop cooler

Thermaltake Massive23 LX

Thermaltake Massive23 LX

Todays laptops are very powerful machines, wrapping up a lot of technology into a small package. Even with good design laptops will get warm if not hot. For my workstation project, I’m looking for a place to keep my laptop when it’s on my desk. This place will need to tilt the laptop to a good comfortable typing position, and if possible help cool the laptop.

Epson DX8400 printer scanner

Epson DX8450 all in one printer.

Epson DX8450 all in one printer.

This is my photo printer. Currently I have this connected to my Windows desktop and I don’t use it that much. Since the whole emphasis of my project is to setup a graphics work area it makes a lot of sense to move my printer and make it a part of this setup. My windows PC will have access to my laser printer, so it’s not like I can’t print.

Canon 30D Camera

Canon 30D

Canon 30D

I have a Canon 30D DLR camera.

Primarily I bought this for use in Astrophotography. This 8 Mega Pixel DSLR camera has proven to be a very versatile and useful purchase. In addition to the standard 10-55mm lens I also have a 55-250 lens as well. Add in my electronic cable release and this is more camera than I can handle.

Mouse

Logitech mx-620

Logitech mx-620

I have a Logitech MX620 mouse that I use with my Macbook pro. This is a 5 button wireless USB mouse. It uses 2 AA batteries and a set of good batteries can last for over a year.

Wacom Cintiq

Wacom Cintiq 21UX

Wacom Cintiq 21UX

This is the Wacom Cintiq. It’s a 21 inch monitor that has a display resolution of 1600*1200.

In addition this piece of kit is also a graphics tablet. It has programmable keys on both the left and the right side. Two programmable “sliders”, as you slide it’s like pressing a key lots of times. The monitor had a metal stand that has four feet. the rear two have rollers.

Workstation setup

In order to get working on this properly, I wish to setup a proper workstation that I can use for creative stuff. I already have a PC setup in my back bedroom, however this is cluttered and geared towards PC gaming. My gaming setup has no real desktop space. Also as is typical with lots of home computer setups leg space is limited because the under desk space is used up to store a printer scanner.
